Custom packaging for growing brands: how to plan your first custom order

Most brands start with plain boxes and a logo sticker. That works — until you sell enough that the packaging starts to matter: on the shelf, in the unboxing video, in the gift. That’s the moment to move to your own custom packaging. Here’s how to plan that first order so it looks established without overspending.
Are you ready for custom packaging?
Custom packaging makes sense when:
- You sell a few hundred units a month or more of your main product, or you’re preparing a retail or gift launch.
- Your product has a fixed size, so the box can be made to fit.
- You want a look a stock box can’t give: your size, your paper, your colors, your finish.
Realistic minimums for custom boxes: 300 pcs for simple printed folding cartons, 500 pcs per design for rigid, magnetic and finished boxes, mailer boxes and paper bags. Below that, a good stock box with a sticker is usually the smarter choice for now.
What to order first
| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| Selling on a retail shelf or marketplace | A printed folding carton in your hero size — from 300 pcs |
| Selling online, shipped direct to customers | A printed mailer box, inside and out — from 500 pcs |
| Gift sets, launches, premium products | A rigid or collapsible magnetic box with an insert — from 500 pcs |
| Shop or pop-up | Paper bags matching your boxes — from 500 pcs |
Five ways to look bigger than you are
- One hero size first. Don’t make a box for every product on day one. Choose the size that fits your bestseller, then add sizes as you grow.
- Spend on one finish, not five. A single foil logo on a good paper beats a busy box with every effect.
- Print inside, keep outside simple. A plain kraft mailer with a printed inside costs less than full-color outside — and creates the reveal.
- Add the small extras. Logo tissue, a sticker seal and a thank-you card make the box feel considered. See our unboxing kit.
- Match everything. Same paper, same foil, same green — consistency is what makes a growing brand look established.

Budget tips
- Ask for quantity tiers. The price at 500 and 1,000 may be closer than you think, because set-up costs are spread further.
- Ship flat. Folding cartons, mailers, paper bags and collapsible rigid boxes cost far less to ship than assembled boxes.
- Get a delivered price. A DDP quote includes shipping and duties, so you know the true cost per box.

FAQ
What is the smallest custom order I can place?
300 pcs for simple printed folding cartons. Rigid, magnetic and finished boxes, mailer boxes and paper bags start from 500 pcs per design.
Do you sell ready-made stock boxes?
No. Every box is custom-made for your brand. If you need fewer than 300 boxes, a stock box with a logo sticker is usually the better choice until your volume grows.
Do I need a designer?
Not necessarily. Send us your logo and your product size; we work out the box and send a free 3D mockup with your artwork.
