Mailer box vs shipping box: the difference, and how to size your box

“Mailer box” and “shipping box” are often used as if they were the same thing. They aren’t — and choosing the right one affects your unboxing, your packing time and your shipping bill.
What is a mailer box?
A mailer box is a corrugated box with a tuck-in lid, dust flaps and locking tabs. It folds together without tape, it is strong enough to go through the post on its own, and it opens like a gift — lid up, product revealed.
What is a shipping box?
A shipping box (regular slotted carton) is the classic brown carton with four flaps on top and bottom that meet in the middle and are taped shut. It is built for strength and stacking, not for presentation.
The differences
| Mailer box | Shipping box | |
|---|---|---|
| Closing | Tuck-in lid, no tape needed | Taped flaps |
| Opening experience | Opens like a gift | Cut open with a knife |
| Printing | Outside and inside | Usually outside only, often plain |
| Typical use | Direct-to-customer orders, subscriptions, PR | Bulk and wholesale shipments, heavy goods |
| Packing speed | Fast, no tape | Needs taping |
| Cost per box | A bit higher | Lower |
Short version: if the box goes to your customer, use a mailer. If it goes to a warehouse or a store, use a shipping box. Many brands put several mailers into one shipping carton for wholesale orders.

Main mailer box styles
- Roll-end tuck-top mailer — the classic e-commerce mailer, with double walls on the sides; strong and neat.
- Tuck-front mailer — lighter, the lid tucks into the front; good for flat items like T-shirts and scarves.
- Printed-inside mailer — any style printed inside, for the reveal.
How to size your mailer box
A box that’s too big means products move, extra void fill and higher shipping cost. Too small and it won’t close. To get it right first time:
- Measure the product as it will be packed — folded garment, product in its retail box, or the whole set together.
- Measure length × width × height at the widest points.
- Add space for what goes with it — tissue, insert, card, a second item.
- Tell us how you’ll pack it. We work out the inside dimensions and allow for the board thickness.
- Check the outside size against courier rules. Couriers charge on the larger of actual weight and dimensional (volume) weight, so a slightly smaller box can save money on every order.
Better still, send us the product. We size the box around it and send a sample to test with your real packing.

Printing inside and out
A popular approach is a simple outside — plain kraft or a single-color logo — and a printed inside that greets the customer. The parcel travels discreetly; the reveal happens at home. See our apparel packaging guide for examples.
