Why your boxes don’t match the sample — and how to prevent it

Paper swatches and boxes with gold, silver and holographic foil logos

It is the most common complaint about custom packaging. On forums and review sites, buyers describe the same story again and again: “not the green I ordered”, “same file, but this batch is a different color”, “nothing like the mockup”. Here is why it happens — and what you can do before you pay a deposit.

Why packaging colors shift

1. Your screen is not ink

Your design lives on a screen that mixes light (RGB). A box is printed with ink (CMYK, or Pantone spot colors) on paper. Some bright, saturated screen colors — vivid greens, electric blues, neon pinks — fall outside what CMYK ink can reproduce. The printer gets the closest possible color, and it looks duller than you expected.

2. The paper changes the color

The same ink looks different on different papers:

Paper What happens to color
Coated white board Sharp, bright, closest to your file
Uncoated or textured specialty paper Ink soaks in; colors look softer and darker
Kraft Brown base shows through; light colors almost disappear
Colored paper Ink mixes with the paper color

3. The finish changes it again

Lamination sits on top of the ink. Matte and soft-touch lamination make colors look deeper and slightly muted; gloss makes them brighter. If your sample was unlaminated and your bulk is matte-laminated, they won’t match.

4. The sample and the bulk were printed differently

Some suppliers print samples on a digital printer and the bulk order on an offset press. The two methods produce different color. A digital sample can look perfect while the offset run looks off.

5. No color standard was agreed

If nobody agreed on a Pantone number or a physical reference, every press operator matches to their own judgment. That is also why reorders drift: the next batch is matched to the file, not to the box you approved last time.

How to prevent it: a checklist

  1. Use Pantone references for brand colors. Give us the Pantone number (for example, a coated or uncoated Pantone code) for each brand color, not just a hex code.
  2. Approve a physical sample — on the real paper with the real finish. A PDF proof checks text and layout; only a physical sample checks color.
  3. Ask how the sample is printed. If the bulk will be printed differently, ask what will change.
  4. Choose your paper with color in mind. If a bright color is essential to your brand, avoid kraft and very absorbent papers — or use foil, which looks the same on any paper.
  5. Keep the approved sample. Both you and the factory should keep one. It is the standard for this order and every reorder.
  6. Ask for photos and video before shipping. Compare the bulk with the sample before the goods leave the factory, not after they reach your warehouse.
  7. For reorders, say “match the last batch”. Send a box from the previous order, or ask the factory to pull their retained sample.

FAQ

Why does my box look different from the mockup on my screen?

Screens show color in light (RGB); boxes are printed in ink (CMYK or Pantone) on paper. Some bright screen colors simply can’t be printed, and the paper itself changes how ink looks. A physical sample is the only reliable preview.

How do I keep my brand color the same on every order?

Give us a Pantone reference for each brand color, approve a physical sample on the real paper and finish, and keep that sample as the standard for every reorder.

What happens if my bulk order doesn’t match the approved sample?

At Silk Packaging we remake it. Your approved sample is the standard we check every order against, and you get photos and video of your actual boxes before anything ships.
