Perfume box packaging: folding carton, rigid or magnetic?

Your perfume box does two jobs: it protects a glass bottle on its way to the customer, and it is the first thing they touch. The right structure depends on where you sell, what you can spend per unit, and how much you want the box to be kept.
This guide compares the three structures most fragrance brands choose between — folding cartons, rigid boxes and magnetic boxes — and covers inserts, finishes, minimums and timing.
The three main perfume box structures
| Folding carton | Rigid box | Magnetic box | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Printed paperboard | Grey board wrapped in paper | Grey board wrapped in paper, hidden magnet |
| Feel | Light, retail | Solid, weighty | Solid, with a satisfying snap |
| Ships | Flat | Assembled | Assembled, or flat if collapsible |
| Best for | Retail, e-commerce, everyday SKUs | Gift sets, hero launches | Gift sets, PR boxes, discovery sets |
| Our MOQ | From 300 pcs (simple designs) | From 500 pcs | From 500 pcs |
Folding cartons
The classic retail perfume box. It is printed on paperboard, usually as a tuck-end carton, and arrives glued and flat, so you pay far less to ship and store it than an assembled box. Foil, embossing and spot UV all work on folding cartons, so they can still look premium.
Choose a folding carton when you sell on shelves or online at volume, or when you are launching and want to keep cost per unit low.
Rigid boxes
A rigid box is thick grey board wrapped by hand in the paper you choose. Lid-and-base and shoulder (neck) boxes are the common perfume styles. Customers feel the weight the moment they lift it, and rigid boxes are often kept long after the perfume is used.
Choose a rigid box for gift sets, limited editions and your hero fragrance. The trade-off is cost and shipping volume, because rigid boxes travel assembled.
Magnetic boxes
A magnetic box is a rigid box with a one-piece hinged lid that closes with a hidden magnet. It is ideal for gift sets and discovery sets. A collapsible magnetic box keeps the premium feel but folds flat for shipping, which solves the main downside of rigid packaging.
See our magnetic gift boxes for how collapsible boxes work.
Inserts: the part customers notice when it’s wrong
A bottle that rattles feels cheap — and can break. Every perfume box should have an insert cut to your bottle and cap:
- Paper and card inserts — plastic-free and easy to recycle.
- EVA foam — firm hold for heavier bottles and travel sprays.
- Velvet-wrapped inserts — the softest, most premium presentation.
For discovery sets, a drawer or flip-lid box with a slotted insert holds each vial upright. Send us the bottle dimensions, or the bottle itself, and we cut the insert to fit.
Finishes that match your fragrance
Your box should echo the bottle and the scent. Common finishes:
- Hot foil (gold, silver, holographic) — echoes a metal cap.
- Blind emboss or deboss — a quiet, tactile logo that feels expensive without ink.
- Spot UV — gloss on a matte box, for contrast.
- Specialty papers — textured, linen or pearlescent paper for rigid boxes.
You can see each finish on a box in our box styles overview.
Minimums, lead times and samples
- MOQ: folding cartons from 300 pcs for simple designs; rigid and magnetic boxes from 500 pcs per design.
- Timing: a 3D mockup in about 7 days, a physical sample in 7–14 days, and production in about 15 days after you approve the sample — plus shipping.
- Samples: free; you only pay shipping. Your approved sample is the standard your bulk order is checked against — if bulk doesn’t match it, we remake it.
Need the perfume as well as the box?
Our sister factory, Arometica, makes private label perfume. Bottle, box and filling can come from one group, which keeps colors, sizes and timing in sync.

FAQ
Which perfume box is cheapest?
A printed folding carton is usually the most cost-effective. It uses less material than a rigid box and ships flat, so freight is lower too.
What is the minimum order for perfume boxes?
At Silk Packaging, simple printed folding cartons start from 300 pcs. Rigid and magnetic perfume boxes, and cartons with special finishes, start from 500 pcs per design.
Do I need an insert?
For glass bottles, yes. A paper, card or EVA insert cut to your bottle stops it moving in transit and makes the box feel finished when it is opened.
