Rigid box vs folding carton vs mailer box: which one do you need?

Three box types cover most branded packaging: rigid boxes, folding cartons and mailer boxes. They look similar in a photo, but they differ a lot in feel, cost and how they ship. Here’s how to choose.

Rigid boxes: when the box is part of the gift
A rigid box is made from thick grey board, wrapped in printed or specialty paper. It doesn’t fold or flex, and customers keep it long after the product is used.
- Choose it for: gift sets, jewelry, premium skincare and fragrance, PR boxes.
- Styles: lid-and-base, drawer, neck-and-shoulder, book-style and magnetic gift boxes.
- Trade-off: costs more and takes up space when shipped assembled. A collapsible rigid box gives the same feel but ships flat.

Folding cartons: the retail workhorse
A folding carton is a single sheet of printed board, cut and glued, delivered flat. Most perfume, cosmetic and supplement boxes on a store shelf are folding cartons.
- Choose it for: retail packaging, perfume and cosmetic boxes, product boxes inside a shipper.
- Styles: tuck-end, snap-lock bottom, crash-lock bottom, sleeves, window boxes.
- Trade-off: it protects from scratches, not from a courier’s drop — ship it inside a mailer or carton.
- Premium? Yes, with foil, emboss and specialty paper — a good carton can look like a much more expensive box.

Mailer boxes: built to travel
A mailer box is made of corrugated board with a tuck-in lid. It folds together without tape and is strong enough to go through the post on its own.
- Choose it for: online orders, subscription boxes, apparel, PR mailings.
- Print: outside, inside, or both — a printed inside makes the opening moment.
- Trade-off: it feels less luxurious than a rigid box, but it does the shipping job by itself.

How to choose in three questions
- Will it be shipped by courier to the customer? Yes → mailer box (or a rigid box / carton inside a shipper).
- Will it sit on a retail shelf? Yes → folding carton.
- Is the box part of the gift, kept after opening? Yes → rigid or magnetic box.
Many brands use two: a folding carton or rigid box for the product, inside a printed mailer for the journey.

FAQ
Is a rigid box the same as a magnetic box?
A magnetic box is one type of rigid box: rigid board wrapped in paper, with magnets hidden in the lid. Other rigid styles are lid-and-base, drawer and neck-and-shoulder boxes.
Can I ship a rigid box by courier on its own?
Usually not. A rigid box is a presentation box; for e-commerce, put it inside a mailer box or shipping carton.
Which is the most eco-friendly?
All three are paper-based and recyclable when made without plastic parts. Folding cartons and mailer boxes use the least material and ship flat, so they have the lowest freight footprint.
