Perfume sample and discovery set packaging: a guide for fragrance brands

Searches for perfume sample kits, 2 ml perfume samples and perfume sample boxes have grown fast over the past year. Discovery sets are now how many customers choose a new fragrance — especially online, where they can’t smell before they buy. The box they come in matters more than most brands think.
Why discovery sets work
A full bottle is a big decision for a customer who has never smelled your fragrance. A discovery set lowers the risk: a few vials, a small price, and a chance to wear each scent for a day. Many brands then offer the set price as a credit toward a full bottle — so the sample box becomes the first step of the sale.
Choose your vial size first
The vial decides the box. Common sizes:
| Vial | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 1–1.5 ml | Gift-with-purchase, sample cards, mailings |
| 2 ml | The standard discovery set vial |
| 5 ml | Premium sets, travel sizes |
| 10 ml | Travel sprays, mini gift sets |
Spray or dab? Sprays are taller because of the pump and cap. Send us the actual vial — a millimetre matters when cutting an insert.
Box styles for samples
Drawer box
A sliding drawer inside a sleeve, with a fitted insert. The classic discovery set — it opens like a gift and holds 3–10 vials in a neat row.

Magnetic flip-lid box
A rigid box with a magnetic lid, for premium sets customers keep on their dresser. Heavier and more expensive, but it feels like a full-size product. See magnetic gift boxes.
Folding carton
A light printed carton for one or two vials — perfect for gift-with-purchase, subscription boxes and events. The most economical option, and it ships flat.
Sample card
A printed card with a slot for a 1–2 ml vial. Cheap to make and mail, with room for scent notes and a code for the full bottle.
The insert does the real work
Vials are small and made of glass. Without a good insert, they rattle, scratch or break. Options:
- Paper and card inserts — plastic-free and recyclable, cut to the vial diameter.
- EVA foam — holds tightest and protects best for long shipping journeys.
- Velvet-wrapped inserts — the most luxurious look and feel.
What to print
The sample box is a sales tool. Use it:
- Scent notes for each vial — inside the lid or on a card.
- A numbered key so customers know which vial is which.
- A code or QR to buy the full bottle, with the set price credited.
- Your brand story, short — two or three lines.
Match the paper, colors and foil to your full-size box, so the set clearly belongs to your brand. See our perfume box guide.
