How much do custom boxes cost? The 9 things that set the price

“How much is a custom box?” is the first question almost every buyer asks — and the honest answer is: it depends on about nine things. Once you know them, you can read any quote, compare suppliers properly, and decide where to save and where to spend.

The quick picture

From least to most expensive per piece, at the same size and quantity:

Packaging Relative cost Why
Printed folding carton $ Single sheet of board, printed, cut and glued by machine
Paper bag $–$$ More paper; handles and reinforcements add cost
Mailer box (corrugated) $–$$ Corrugated board; printing inside adds a pass
Rigid box (lid and base) $$$ Thick grey board wrapped in paper, partly by hand
Magnetic gift box $$$–$$$$ Rigid box plus magnets, extra wrapping and often an insert

Not sure which type you need? See rigid box vs folding carton vs mailer box.

The 9 things that set the price

1. Structure

A box glued and folded by machine is cheaper than a box wrapped by hand. Rigid and magnetic boxes involve more manual work, which is why they cost more and have higher minimums.

2. Size

Bigger boxes use more board and fewer fit on each printing sheet. A few millimetres can push a box onto a bigger sheet — ask whether a small size change would lower the price.

3. Material

Standard white board and kraft are the most economical. Specialty textured papers, colored papers and thicker grey board cost more.

4. Printing

Plain or one-color printing costs less than full color. Printing inside a box (popular on mailer boxes) adds a second print pass.

5. Finishes

Each finish — hot foil, emboss, deboss, spot UV, soft-touch lamination — is an extra process. Foil and emboss also need a plate or die made for your design. See which finish to choose.

6. Inserts

A paper, card or EVA insert that holds your product adds material and work, but often saves money on breakage and returns.

7. Quantity

Every order carries set-up costs — cutting dies, plates, machine setup — that are the same for 100 or 10,000 boxes. More boxes spread that cost further, so the unit price drops. That’s why it pays to understand MOQs and ask for two or three quantity tiers.

8. Shipping volume

Boxes that ship flat — folding cartons, mailer boxes, paper bags and collapsible magnetic boxes — take far less space than assembled rigid boxes. On a sea or air shipment, that can change your landed cost a lot.

9. Duties and delivery

The factory price is not what you pay in the end. Freight, customs clearance and import duties come on top — unless you buy DDP (delivered duty paid), where one price covers delivery to your door.

Watch out for hidden costs

Buyers often feel misled when the final bill is higher than the quote. Before you pay, ask:

  • Are dies and plates included or charged separately?
  • Is the sample free, and who pays shipping?
  • Are inserts included?
  • Is the price EXW, FOB or DDP? (Only DDP includes delivery and duties.)
  • If a supplier advertises a “free logo”, where is that cost — in the unit price, or in a higher minimum?

How to get an accurate quote fast

Send these and you’ll get a real price, not a guess:

  1. What you are packing, and its size (or the product itself)
  2. The box type you have in mind — or ask us to suggest one
  3. Quantity, ideally two or three tiers (for example 500 / 1,000 / 3,000)
  4. Your logo or artwork, and any finish you like
  5. Where the boxes are going

Send them to Jin — you’ll get options and a price within 24 hours, with every cost listed and DDP delivery available.

FAQ

Why can’t I get a price without giving the size and quantity?

Because size decides how much material each box uses and how many fit on a printing sheet, and quantity decides how the set-up cost is spread. Without them any price is a guess.

What hidden costs should I ask about?

Cutting dies, foil or emboss plates, sample fees, inserts, packing, shipping, and import duties. Ask for a quote that lists all of them, or a delivered (DDP) price.

Do you charge for foil plates?

Foil and emboss plates are a one-time set-up cost for each design. Every cost is listed in your quote, so there are no surprises.

Are samples free?

Yes. Samples are free — you only pay shipping.
